Incident Details

January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

The Pilot was launching from a beach diagonally towards the water. The light wind (about 4mph) was coming from NW on a west facing beach. The launch area was somewhat restricted by water on the west, a pier to the North and palm trees behind.

Shortly after liftoff he started a turn, presumably to avoid overflying the water. While heading downwind and towards a stand of palm trees, the bank increased the pilot descended hard into soft sand. One witness reported that the wing spun just before impact due to heavy brake input. It appears likely that when he realized he was not going to finish the turn before hitting the trees, he increased the break pull. The soft sand made the results surprisingly benign.
