Incident Details
January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
An experienced pilot made a poor decision and flew in what turned out to be turbulent mixing in low pressure, thunderstorm conditions. The pilot was on vacation near Atlanta from the desert southwest and was anxious to fly near his family’s home. Weather throughout the day had been stormy with rain.
Lesson learned:
Eagerness to fly is no excuse for ignoring proper preflight planning. A simple call to WX-BRIEF would have apprised the pilot of the poor conditions. In addition, the pilot relied too heavily on his weather experience in another part of the country that did not apply to the new location.
