Incident Details

January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Instructor A & B were working with two students in the air. Instructor A had a student A in the landing pattern. As it was the student’s 10th flight, the instructor looked away for brief periods to work with another student (or other pilots) on the ground. Instructor B was working student B who was also in the pattern but doing S-turns on final. Both were up fairly high (over 200′ AGL). Student A turned bass leg. Student B was doing S-turns on final to lose altitude. Student A was headed West and contacted Student B’s wing who was headed North. That collapsed and chewed up the struck wing, leaving only about 40% of it inflated and in a generally useless direction. Student A (who hit the wing) was still flying but now had student B’s wing wrapped around him and Student B hanging below him. They were dropping quickly and starting a slow turn. Instructor A called brake inputs on the radio including that required to stop the turn and also to flare. They were extremely fortunate that only one had relatively minor injury.
