Incident Details
January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Pilot states that he was flying into a 5 to 10 mile an hour wind eastbound at about 80 agl and did a left turn downwind to the west. During the turn the left break was at about 40 to 50% and the right break was at about 5 to 10%. The trim was set to neutral. Approx. 1/3 of the way through the turn the pilot noticed that the glider was turning a little sharper than desired. The pilot then felt a jerk that turned him face up and no response (resistance) was felt on the breaks. The pilot reacted by quickly pumping breaks to full once to feel any resistance from the wing. Feeling nothing the breaks were than immediately returned to and maintained at about a 40% on position. The pilot was not able to see the wing which witnesses say had fallen behide the pilot. Power going into the turn was at approx. 80 to 90% and reduced to about 60 to 70% during the event. The point of contact was in a bean field about 1/4 mile east of the launch site.
An airborne witness, who was due west about 1/8 mile and headed east saw the entire event head-on. He stated the wing went way back, both trailing edges drooped down and it started a descent. After about 3 mild fore-aft oscillations, but with the wing he contacted the ground.
