Incident Details
March 8, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
I took off at 8:40 am in very light conditions forward launch, and headed to the Monuments. I climbed to about 2500 AGL to be well above them once I get close. I guess because of my height and excitement from the scenery I didn’t notice my ground speed increasing. When I decided to go back I found myself not penetrating. I didn’t have a speed bar installed. I decided to land at the dirt road you can see on included photo. I shut off the engine and was concentrating on correcting possible surges or frontals. As I descended I started to penetrate a bit, air was very smooth. At a height of approximately 60′ I noticed my descend speed increasing. I looked up – fully inflated wing – looked down – ground approaching fast – one wrap, breaks down, and I was on the ground. I think I hit at about 1200fpm. There was no surge or pendulum. My landing was about mile down wind from where the picture was taken, wind was parallel to the road. I was coming towards the camera. Three monuments on right, large mesa on left. They are about 1.5 miles away from each other, the road is in the middle. After contemplating with my friends I thing the most likely thing that happened was a ground thermal bubble and I was behind it. Feel free to tell me if you know better what might happened.
