Incident Details

March 12, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

This was a new site of which I was unfamiliar with. It was around 9 a.m. and the grass was still wet with dew. The LZ was a burm from a road with a 30deg decline. On approach to the LZ my motor failed to shut off and I was coming in too fast. The wind had suddenly died and I was too much in the brakes. It was difficult to judge the descent rate due to coming in on a decline patch of grass. I hit the ground much faster than anticipated and slipped on the grass. My motor was still running and broke the prop. A friend shut off the motor on the motor mounted kill switch. It would have been even worse if I didn’t have a ground person. My knee was twisted on landing. Likely some ACL damage. Lesson Learned: When flying new territory do a few LZ bys and choose a flat surface. Dry preferably. Due to the light wind I should have come in with no brakes and done a full flare at four to five feet. I should have worn my knee brace!
