Incident Details
April 3, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Pilot flawlessly took off, all appeared normal from the ground. Within several seconds of take off, witnesses noticed that wing was veering to the right and that the pilot kept throttling back, losing altitude each time. Within 20-30 seconds pilot landed crosswind. Landing appeared to be fine and smooth (as smooth as could be expected in scrub brush). Wind caught the wing and pulled the trike completely over.
3 witnesses were at the scene within 1 minute. Pilot appeared fine, and was talking. Complained of sore arm and wrist. A bruise was already starting to appear on the forearm. It appeared that when the trike rolled over, some part of it rolled over her arm and wrist. Took her to the Emergency Room at nearby hospital, X-ray revealed a fractured wrist. Wrist is now in a cast and she is looking forward to getting back in the air possibly next weekend.
In talking with the pilot after the incident, it was discovered that somehow her right riser/lines were twisted, making it impossible to steer the wing. She was unable to pull the right toggle, but wing was in a steady right hand turn due to twisted lines. Power lines in close proximity to the field made her decide to land crosswind rather than taking a chance of not being able to control the wing near the powerlines.
Only damage to equipment was very minor damage to cage from rollover, all else fine.
