Incident Details
May 5, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
After takeoff, I climbed into my seat at too low an altitude. When I reached for my brake, I discovered that my throttle cable was routed through my J-bar, so I could not reach the left brake (about 3 inches beyond my reach). Attempted to hold throttle in right hand while reaching for brake with left. Dropped throttle and crashed in the process — with neither hand on either brake, and still seated. Upon reflection, should have 1) inspected throttle cable to make sure it was free, 2) should have been at a safer height before climbing into my seat (to provide margin in case there is a problem, and 3) after problem was discovered, should have climbed to a safe height before I attempted to solve the problem.
