Absolute beautiful morning, not a cloud in the sky, slight breeze out of the East. After a perfect reverse launch, got to a nice altitude and wanted to just go for a relaxing flight on a saturday morning. Cruising over farms, lakes and wooded areas at around 1000 feet up, was about 4 miles north from my take off point when it happened. Something was slapping against my props, making a slapping noise. Turning to look, I saw parts of the drive belt flying off. Quickly killing the motor to prevent any (further) damage, I was able to spot a place to land, and glided on in for a safe and smooth landing behind some houses. Packing up my wing, I strapped on my motor and started huffing the 3+ mile walk back to my launch site. Got to love the locals, as thankfully after about a half mile someone stopped and gave me a ride (equipment and all) back to my truck. Got to say though, God was watching over me as earlier in the flight, I was buzzing over a lake at a really low level, had the belt given out then, I would have been in real trouble. Lesson learned, exactly what my instructor taught me in training…ALTITUDE IS YOUR FRIEND, and ALWAYS PLAN AHEAD AND HAVE A LANDING SPOT IN MIND JUST IN CASE.
