Incident Details

August 18, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

After pre-flight checks were complete and initial eng. run-up was done pilot made a flawless launch on this calm summer morning. He completed 2 circuits around launch site and headed West for a XC flight.Cruising about 900’agl he buzzed the Ross County fairgrounds and adjacent areas for around an hour then headed South towards Chillicothe (4) miles away.Flying South for 2 miles he could hear the eng. getting louder. He also noticed the engine was losing h.p. as he fluctuated the throttle. Realizing a problem he idled the eng. and scoped the area for a landing. The 9th hole,a beautiful par 5 of 550yds would be perfect and its within gliding range.Conditions were still calm as he shut it down at 100’agl..and performed a perfect 3pt.landing in front of the VA.police, who had noticed his problem and watched his descent. They assisted in the gathering of the wing & trike and were very understanding of his dilemma. At that time one of the officers noticed the muffler was broken in two at the first bend near the head & said that the safety wire that was wrapped around the upper joint to the cage kept it from getting into the prop! That would have been an exciting story, but because of the excellent training and calm de- meanor the pilot he handled this with cool headedness and an easy fix is the reward! The moral is:..get high, play high, stay high..you just may need the room!!
