Incident Details

November 26, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

The pilot had been flying circuits around a familiar PPG field and knew he was low on fuel but figured he could get one more lap. During the climbout for that lap, his motor died out from fuel starvation. He spent a second or two trying to work the throttle in an effort to keep it running for longer. He had beans ahead which would have been the best choice–they were into the wind and safe to land in. But he looked back to the green grass of his launch area and decided to go for that. He pulled into a fairly tight right turn (see diagram) and was shocked at how quickly he lost altitude. Plus, now going downwind, the ground track turn shallowed and he didn’t make it all the way around. He plowed into a fence going over 40 mph (his estimation). He put his feet out to absorb the impact and one went between fence boards while the other hit a post. That foot wound up being broken.
