Incident Details

May 6, 2007 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Careless throttle led to wing collapse, tree landing. I had just taken off to the west from the SE corner of a friends lot, just S of the RC runway which is E-W. I carelessly let the throttle go to idle shortly after passing 80 ft. I failed to appreciate the severity of the surge and applied power. I was immediately slammed left, right, left. I went hands up, power off and waited. I was light in the seat, and tilted forward. I looked up and saw the wing, even with me and pointed at the ground. The wing recovered following a 90 degree to the right. That left me headed at the west corner of the white 32ft wide pole barn, the trees about 30ft to the west. Knowing I could not clear or move the barn I opted for the trees. I pulled left and powered up.The wing ended up vertical in the tree about 4ft off the ground. I swung like a tether-ball skipping twice, just short of two 4-6 in thick fruit trees. I escaped with a couple of scrapes and a bruise on my knee. The wing split several seams, broke a couple of lines while pulling the webbing off the harness, and it had a couple of minor punctures from the tree. The cage seems to have skipped without noticeable problem. The prop struck the left radial arm, breaking the prop, bending the radial arm and cracking the hoop. The right side ofthe hoop was bent down from the riser pull before the harness webbing broke loose. The pictures were last fall, the trees had not leafed out when I had my incident, 4-21-07 at 1810.
