Incident Details

October 21, 2007 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Twenty minutes after an uneventful launch and cruising at approximately 300′ AGL over open horse farms in Northern Virginia, there was an audible ‘pop’ and the engine quit. With minimal wind affecting the choice of landing spots, I performed a couple turns and landed in a pasture next to a fence along a stone road. Expert support from airborne wingman directed the recovery truck to my location and an uneventful pick up and return to base was executed. The cause of the engine out was that the spark plug blew out the top of the cylinder head stripping all threads. The spark plug was still attached to the spark plug wire upon postflight inspection. The motor only had 28 hours engine time. No other damage to the motor, quad, or wing.
