Incident Details
December 19, 2007 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
This is a brand new motor. The fourth flight. After 5 min of warm up, the take off was ok but seemed to not have full power maybe 75% at full throttle. After 5 minutes I was flying over the sea at about 250′ at a 45 deg angle from the beach. I always pre-think an emergency landing. The motor went quiet, no sputtering or anything. I made a semi circle and landed fine on the beach 1 mile from the LZ. Motor would not start, there was no noticeable damage. The Distributor examined it and found the coil had separated and the gasket installed to the bing carb was the wrong/old model. Unfortunately it involved 300+ miles of driving, but the motor runs perfect now. I considered requesting a new motor but I figured it had been tuned up when I took in and it had been broken in and ran fine. This motor had the best reputation in the industry for reliability, it must have been the last built on a Friday ;-) Always fly with a motor out in mind, no motor is 100% reliable.
