Incident Details
June 28, 2008 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
I had enjoyed the first hour of a long evening flight, when my motor sputtered momentarily at 3000′, about a mile from the LZ (a new location for me). I returned home and prepared to land. This location was very tight, and the wind direction had shifted 90 degrees since take off. Landing now required coming in high over power lines and executing a number of gentle S turns to avoid crops at the short end of the field. I planned to do an engine-on landing to provide some additional control in this tight space, but during the final S-turn, my engine died suddenly (fried primary coil), and the wing surged. I braked hard, but hit the ground before recovering completely. Somehow, I avoided injury and nothing on the machine was permanently damaged. The impact, however, was memorable and the outcome could’ve been much worse if the timing had been just a few seconds different. Lessons learned: ALWAYS expect an engine out at the worst possible moment, and avoid tight LZ’s – it’s better to land out safely somewhere and worry about making your way back after you’re safely on the ground :)
