Incident Details

May 11, 2008 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

I took off in good condition around 5:30 in the evening. Winds were from the north at about 4-5 mph. After playing around a bit I climbed to around 1300′ and was checking out the distance of pull on my brake lines before they would start to move the trailing edge of my new wing so I could adjust them later if needed. After that I noticed that I had drifted farther south than I had expected to. Then I decided time to get home, but the wind had picked up so much that I couldn’t penetrate the headwind. I thought no problem I have my cell phone and I will just landout on a friend of mines property on south. I had a couple hard gust hit me up high that sent the wing into some serious osculations, but made it on down to my destination.I lined up into the wind and was coming down fine into the cow pasture when all the sudden a big gust hit me again, now I would say I was about 25feet above the ground. It sent the wing hard over to the left, I countered and it went hard to the right. Then I looked, up it was overhead, but I new I was in trouble. I immediately looked down and I was coming straight down. I was at around 8′. I flared and tried to throttle up to get it flying to no avail. I slammed into the ground. I broke my left fibula, bent my cage and broke one end of the prop. Lesson learned: Don’t get in too big of a hurry to fly. The pressure is on since it is the beginning of the season. Always check the weather conditions.
