Incident Details
July 10, 2008 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
while flying over a to a friends place to do a fly-by, at 900 ft after hopping a nice thermal, went to power up and the motor just bogged and died. Upon trying to restart the motor just turned over, no gas. I then went into emergency landing mode and made best glide to my friends back yard, having to clear pine trees and his pond. I cleared the trees, but the pond sucked me in right at the bank. The wing made it to dry land, but I ended up in knee deep water, as my brake handle caught the rowboat oar and stopped me from making the bank. I sloshed out of the pond to the amazement of my friend. I looked like the Swamp Thing with all the weeds hanging off my cage. I told him what happened and he went right for the gas tank. Sure enough, the pick-up tube had fallen off right under the cap. The ethanol had expanded the 1/4in tubing to 3/8″ and it literally fell off the barb fitting. Beware of the ethanol and the effect it will have on you gas lines!. I’m changing mine out to an ethanol proof type.
