Incident Details

January 14, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Launching in deep sand, the pilot used brakes to get airborne before reaching full flying speed. As a result the wing hung back putting the pilot more horizontal than desirable. This caused the pilot to torque to the left. As the wing yawed clockwise toward buildings, the pilot (looking up at wing) attempted to stop the rotation by applying more left brake, unknowingly exacerbating the problem. A classic lock out occurred. Pilot fell some 30′ to the ground landing on his butt & right lower cage. Prop destroyed. Remarkably the titanium cage/frame suffered only minor damage, was straightened, prop replaced & pilot flew with same equipment that afternoon. Prevention: Stay upright in harness. Don’t get lazy. Run the wing off the ground with high airspeed, using little or no brake. Do not attempt to get seated until much later. Consider a smaller motor or use less power to launch. Recovery: Look forward, reduce power, release most brake, prepare to land. Continued flight might be possible if corrections are made early enough.
