Incident Details
January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
While circling an island on the Lake, flying about 4 ft above the water and 0 to 15ft from the shore (as I always do) I started to add power to climb and the throttle didn’t respond – only a sucking noise from carb. Well you eat up 4 ft fairly quickly. There was no shore line there to land on but the water is only knee deep so I chose to land in a sitting position rather than trying to stand and trip on the water (no wind) and fall on my face. Very smooth landing, no damage to my unit, some nice folks on a pontoon boat came by and gave me a ride to the dock, about 1/4 mile away.
Laid my wing out in the parking lot, answered a lot of questions, the motor started fine, but the carb is not working so i didn’t fly back to the airport.
ed: Note that water landings in shallow *moving* water (including tidal) or water above the pilot’s head has caused fatalities in the past.
