Incident Details
January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Another pilot and myself took off to cruise around and get some video with me as the photographer. Once established in a cruise/climb I started reaching into my jacket where I had the camera stowed. Its strap, an add on, was around my neck. Just as I started pulling the camera up, I heard a “ticking” noise then whack! The strap got caught in something and pulled the camera up hard against my neck. It then broke. At that point I felt lucky to be alive figuring my little neck was not much match for that thick strap.
I’d made the strap short enough to stay out of the prop but didn’t plan on what it got into: The pull start mechanism. The strap worked its way into the face of where the pull start cord comes out, wrapped around and got pulled it in. It broke because it melted almost instantly.
Be careful about what goes around your neck and where it can wind up!
