Incident Details

February 15, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

After a normal landing to a crowded (other wings and pilots) soft sandy beach sight the pilot of a powered paraglider trike was out of his harness and in the process of unhooking his wing with his back to the approach of other PPGs and PPCs. As he was unhooking he heard a noise that caused him to turn around. He saw a small two place PPC that appeared to be out of control and heading directly at him. With no time to spare he jumped and ran to the side as the PPC hit his trike and rolled over on its side coming to rest on its right side on top of the PPG wing. The PPG pilot was not struck but his trike sustained damage to the left axel and minor damage to the frame. The PPG wing was damaged only to the lines and some fuel spilled on the right leading edge area. Both occupants of the PPC received no injuries. The PPC damage was a broken prop blade and no damage to the wing. Both units were returned to service by the next day. The pilot of the PPC reported seeing the pilot of the PPG trike and was attempting to safely fly by him to land after aborting the first intended landing spot due to uneven and dangerously soft sand for the wheels. As the PPC pilot added power to fly by, the aircraft settled to the ground and its right main wheel hit soft sand, slowing the PPC causing it to settle onto all three wheels and yawed violently to the right toward the parked PPG. With no time to react to the yaw, the pilot and passenger braced for impact with the parked PPG.
