Incident Details
November 3, 2008 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Pilot went to launch a student’s unit as it had not been flown for over 1 year. During the first attempt at inflation, the hangpoints were not right. The hangpoint was readjusted. During the reverse inflation, when the pilot turned to launch, the wing started an oscillation. The pilot corrected the oscillation, and just as he was going to full power, the left wingtip collapsed. Lines were drawn into the prop damaging one prop tip. One line stitching at the D-ring was pulled such that it pulled the threads from the line breaking it free of the D-ring. The cage was bent on one corner, and net was cut in addition to the prop damage. Upon review of the video and from other observers, they commented that the wing looked like it had corrected and was stable when it suddenly collapsed. Conditions at the time were mentioned that the wind was a bit “squirrely”. Either way, it was pilot error.
