Incident Details

October 30, 2009 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Arrived at field, set up gear. Opened fuel valve from tank, and swapped non-vented transport fuel tank cap for vented cap for flight. Engine was hard to start. Pulled several times. No start. Suspected flooding. Opened throttle to half power to clear the flooding, pulled, engine started and came instantly to half power, pushing frame and motor toward pilot. Firm grip on frame and hitting kill switch instantly prevented injury. But it was frightening. Noticed fuel foaming out of carburetor. Diagnosed problem as opening fuel valve before switching non-vented fuel cap for vented fuel cap. Warm weather had casued pressure to build in fuel tank. Opening fuel valve first allowed pressure to push fuel into carbureator. Lesson learned – always vent tank before opening fuel valve to prevent flooding and engine start problems.
