Incident Details
October 26, 2009 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
A student under instruction by an out-of-town instructor setup for a launch about 100 feet away from a line of other pilots. The pilots that were 100 feet away and upwind were three wings laid out side by side with no clearance between the wingtips. The middle of the three pilots was just about to pull up his wing when the out-of-town instructor advised the student pilot to launch. One of the other pilots to the middle pilot’s side was waiting for middle pilot to launch before beginning his launch. The student, at the very very last second realized he was not going to go airborne and killed his engine while running over the middle pilot’s brand new, just unfolded wing. Fortunately, pilot’s wing was not damaged. The instructor responsible for the student checked the pilot’s new wing, called it a day, packed up, and returned home. From all pilots observing the event, it was believed the student pilot was doing what his instructor told him to do under radio contact. It is not known what radio instructions were given to the student that finally aborted the event, however, instructing a student to launch into that situation was a poor decision by the instructor.
