Incident Details
November 2, 2009 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
the first of 3 engine outs was over water with questionable height for reaching a good LZ on terra firma – good thing for electric start as it got me back to shore. Thinking I was merely running low on gas I kept on going for another engine out – almost back to the LZ the 3rd siezure would not restart and although I could make the LZ, I would not clear the wires to land there. Picking a small residential back yard I dropped height quickly with steep s-turns and poked my glider into a hole not long enough to land in but free of other crap. Slowing the wing to nearly stall before regaining speed for flare I was dropping faster than usual and the front wheel in first broke the main frame at a weld…the 2″ square aluminum tubing acted as a magnificant brake after the front wheel left the trike, stopping all before PPG pogo over the top. Upon kicking around upsidedownish the trike rolled over to turtle position and the good news is the new 3-blade Scimitar is fine. Lessons learned include setting the walbro for high pressure if flying in it and run a rich mixture if in doubt also fly high enough to pick a good alternate LZ and the mostest biggest lesson is to have a water floaty if flying over water. In the end it was all worth it, more experience and still kicking and oh yeah my experience is that a home made trike will cost much more in the long run than if you had just spent the BIG BUCKS FIRST
