Incident Details

September 23, 2010 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

An instructor was guiding a new pilot in a trike at takeoff. Pilot over-corrected his glider at takeoff, swung badly to his left and then swung sharply back to his right, striking the instructor. The prop on the trike just nipped the instructor’s right hand, severing the ulna artery and breaking various bones. Flight assistants called 911 and the instructor was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. After 7 weeks, he still has little use of his right hand although the prognosis is fairly good for a 90% recovery of hand function. The accident was not the pilot’s fault – he was a beginner. Lesson here: Bystanders should allow plenty of room if they must be in front of launching aircraft.
