Incident Details
March 4, 2011 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Helicopter-like spin of glider shortly after takeoff and a straight down landing. He got up and was on his feet. Problem: Big wooden stick in his lines.
It was a fly-in environment. I was watching this guy kite and noticed he had a cluster of lines stuck together by a gnarly twisted wooden stick. But I was in conversation and never thought the pilot didn’t see it. Before I knew it, the guy reversed it up, turned around and was gone. As soon as he got off the ground the wing took a weird shape. I could see the pilot pulling many times on his left toggle hoping to break it up. Soon the whole wing spun around and he came down. I felt like crap.
