Incident Details
July 12, 2011 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Pilot executed a forward inflation and was running at nearly full speed when he stumbled and fell. The prop sliced into his fuel tank and it erupted in flames. A nearby instructor pulled him away from the fire. The prop was carbon fiber and the machine was equipped with electric start. This type of incident, where the prop hits the fuel tank, is somewhat common but has never resulted in a fire until now. Ed: we recommend that the prop tip has at least 4″ of clearance from the fuel tank for short props and 6″ of clearance on longer props (over about 45″).
