Incident Details

July 9, 2013 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Wing inflated normal, started running full throttle and lifted off for ~1 second and 1 foot, but as rounding a line of houses, there was apparently some down rotor that put me back on the ground running. I observed some high and low spots in the ground that I had to run over and did not concentrate on the wing position. The slight turbulence caused by the row of houses caused the wing to move off to the right, and before I knew it, it was too late. The wing pulled me hard to the right, throwing me on the ground. I killed the engine before landing, but the prop was still spinning fast enough to shatter and take out the cage. My hip landed on my right wrist breaking a small bone that feels fully healed 4 weeks later, no cast or bandage or cut. X-ray at the doctors office confirmed the break, but there was no course of action due to the particular break and doctor said he classifies this as a sprain even though there was a broken bone. In the future, move further away from obstacles such as houses. The sudden loss of lift should have been a sign not to continue and re-position the takeoff instead of trying to continue running with little lift.
