Incident Details

September 26, 2014 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Pilot had been flying a new slalom freestyle wing for a couple of weeks. He hooked up a speedbar for the first time to this wing prior to takeoff. He made several low passes by a neighbor mowing grass on the flying field. The neighbor reported he looked up and saw the wing collapsed or stalled and the pilot falling about 100 yards away from the field. Pilot impacted ground next to several low power wires, leading to initial speculation that he hit the wires. Further review and autopsy lead to belief that he fell a lot further than wire impact would have caused. Pilot killed upon impact. Trimmers found with one side 1 inch out and the other side full in. Reserve appears not to have been deployed by pilot. Take away lesson is try out new flight regimes (i.e. speedbar) at high enough altitude to respond to anomalies.
