Incident Details
August 23, 2015 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
After talking with the distraught pilot who described the awful experience, he allowed it to be posted here. The hope is that others could learn, be encouraged to even greater vigilance, and avert having a fun, simple, benign flight degrade so quickly into tragedy. They weren’t filming, they weren’t “tearing it up”, they were just going out for a tour.
This is a summary.
Two pilots were planning to fly a cross country together. Pilot 1 launched and was flying around, climbing very slowly, waiting for pilot 2 to launch. Pilot 2 launched and was climbing out.
At some point afterwards, approximately 200 feet AGL, pilot 1 saw the wing of pilot 2 come immediately into view from below and on his left, only feet away, and rising. Pilot 1 took evasive action but it was too late. Pilot 2’s wing contacted pilot 1’s motor and got damaged in a way that caused pilot 2 to enter a spiral and impact the ground.
