Incident Details
June 5, 2015 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Had been flying for a few minutes. Had found a plastic bag to drop and chase around the sky. Done this many times before. Usually can catch it. Sometimes it ends up in the lines, but this isn’t a big deal since its so light. This time I missed the catch (about 100 feet above ground into wind) and the bag got stuck just above risers. I put the toggles on the magnets and proceeded to grab the bag and pull it down. Heard a snap and a drop on the right side of the harness (I thought a shackle on my harness broke). The wing enters a slow left turn. I look around to assess the damage and realize one of the tip steering line (2d system) is broken on the right side. I pull right Toggle to stop left turn without much effect. I decide, because I was low to go with the left turn, make a full 360 and land into the wind using d risers to flare. Landing was ok. Dropped a knee. The key part to point out is the gaps the three piece cage make are in the exact right position to pull in a toggle if they come off the magnets (pulling the plastic bag down must have popped them off the stows). There were two burn marks on the plastic clip showing right were the lines went through the cage.
