Incident Details
May 15, 2013 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:
Pilot is self-taught with 92 flights. Pilot is experienced hang glider pilot. Prior takeoff had significant pilot induced oscillation that led to successful takeoff after near miss with ground upon takeoff.
On second launch, pilot encountered some sink, and went to full throttle. At about 60 feet, strong riser twist had commenced and while climbing out pilot was off right brake getting seated. Full riser twist occurred resulting in spin on yaw axis and fall to ground.
Pilot remained conscious throughout, but had significant deformative trauma to right upper thigh. I called 911 and directed emergency personnel to crash site.
Pilot admitted to hospital with shattered right upper femur. Reconstructive surgery required. No fracture to pelvis observed. Pilot initially unaware as to what had happened, but was familiar with concept of riser twist.
