Incident Details

February 24, 2013 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Pilot was cruising at a very low altitude to avoid a high wind sheer at altitude, roughly 10feet AGL. Terrain under pilot was a beach so safe landing was assured. Due to the wind sheer, the pilot was on his way back to camp when the propeller exploded behind him. Pilot immediately shut off motor and flared into a landing. Pilot immediately noticed the smell of gasoline and the sound of leaking fluids after landing. After the pilot unclipped, he went around to the backside of the paramotor to check for the cause and damage. The airbox for blackhawk paramotors comes from the factory held to frame with a zip tie. This zip tie chose this flight to snap, allowing the airbox to go through the prop while at cruise, causing the prop to explode. Fragments from the prop ripped a large gash in the fuel tank causing a big fuel leak. Vibrations from the explosion also caused an exhaust mount to fail and destroyed the drive belt. This pilot will be safety-wiring the airbox to the frame from now on, I recommend other pilots flying with a similar configuration do the same.
