Incident Details

March 9, 2021 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

Pilot was attempting to start the engine to determine running condition, prior to sale. The safety cage had been removed earlier during disassembly of trike. Engine was mounted to frame which was standing on garage floor. The pilot was standing behind the engine and holding the frame with one arm. Engine was started using the electric starter. The throttle was partially open 50 % of full throttle when the engine started and reved up quickly. Pilot was not able to control the engine force and the frame assembly moved quickly causing the prop to strike the pilot in the lower jaw and right shoulder with the propeller. As the frame twisted the propeller struck the concrete floor and stopped the engine and broke the propeller. After the accident the pilot was able to call 911 on his cell phone and contact emergency personnel. Emergency personally arrived on scene and transported him to hospital in an ambulance. Severe damage was done to pilot’s lower jaw, breaking it in numerous pieces before striking the right shoulder inflicting a deep wound to tissue and muscle. Pilot has spent 4 weeks in the hospital and an additional 10 days in a rehabilitation hospital before going home. Pilot is facing a long recovery and numerous surgeries to repair the injuries.
