Incident Details

January 1, 2006 Location of the incident: , Type of Incident:

I had been taking pictures and circled around to take more shots of the same pilot. He was looking me as I set up a slow convergence then put both hands on the camera to snap off a few. We got closer and at the point where he should have turned away from me he slightly turned towards me. That quickly put us on a solid collision course and I immediately reached up to pull the left brake. We barely avoided hitting. Had I missed my reach for that brake we would have fully engaged each others wings, probably having our bodies hit with catastrophic results.

There was no communication and I was not familiar flying close with the other pilot. Then being in that position without my hands in the controls left me incredibly vulnerable.

Note: The picture at the right was NOT the pilot in the report. But it was this type of picture that was being shot.
